On August 31st, 2006 the El Cerrito Police Department in conjunction with the Avoid the 25, anti DUI campaign, conducted a sobriety checkpoint on San Pablo Ave., between Hill St. and Cutting Blvd. The operation ran between 8:00pm and 2:30am.

Officers from the El Cerrito, San Pablo, Richmond, Hercules, Kensington and Pinole Police Departments screened 1063 vehicles. Officers administered field sobriety tests to approximately twenty drivers. Of those vehicles screened, officers made 10 DUI arrests.

Numerous members of the public passing through the checkpoint were very complimentary and highly supportive of the Sobriety Checkpoint. This checkpoint was one of three conducted throughout Contra Costa County during this Labor Day weekend. Our goal is to educate the public on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs. These statistics were reported to the California Highway Patrol as part of the statewide driving under the influence campaign.

On Tuesday August 28, 2007 at about 12:06 am El Cerrito Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 1400 block of Elm Street. After an investigation, Jeffery Norkunas, a 38 year old male resident of El Cerrito, was arrested for assault. Norkunas was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Sunday August 26, 2007 at about 4:15 am Officer Hubbs arrested Rami Mohmed Hassnen, a 31 year old male resident of Fremont, after Hassnen was found in possession of cocaine during a traffic stop. Hassnen was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility pending the filing of charges by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.

On Sunday August 26, 2007 at about 10:04 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the area of Junction Ave and Knott Ave and arrested David Avelar, a 40 year old male resident of El Cerrito, when he was found in possession of methamphetamine. Avelar was released pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Friday August 24, 2007 at about 10:45 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 5600 block of El Dorado Street. After an investigation Shigeyo Suzuki, a 26 year old female resident of El Cerrito, was arrested for assault. Suzuki was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Friday August 24, 2007 at about 1:41 am Officer Chalk arrested Luis Alonzo Ernesto, a 28 year old male resident of San Pablo, and Diana Gomez, a 26 year old female resident of Richmond, after they were found to be in possession of and transporting methamphetamine for sales during a traffic stop. Ernesto and Gomez were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Thursday August 23, 2007 at about 5:43 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to Albertson's, at 1000 El Cerrito Plaza, on a report of shoplifting. After an investigation Dwayne Wilson, a 41 year old male resident of Oakland, was arrested for theft. Wilson was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Wednesday August 22, 2007 at about 4:55 pm El Cerrito Police Officers served a search warrant in the 300 block of Behrens Street and arrested Casey Nefcy, a 30 year old male resident of El Cerrito, and Heron Pedrick, a 32 year old female resident of El Cerrito, for cultivation and possession of marijuana for sales. Nefcy and Pedrick were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Wednesday August 22, 2007 at about 9:34 am Officer Elder arrested Brian Dhondt, a 31 year old male resident of Richmond, after Dhondt was found in possession of a stolen vehicle. Dhondt was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Tuesday August 21, 2007 at about 9:40 pm El Cerrito Police Officers were advised of a robbery that just occurred on the BART path behind 11780 San Pablo Ave. A citizen had been confronted by two males who simulated guns in their waistbands and stole the victim's valuables. Officers apprehended the suspects, Stephen Hopson, a 21 year old male resident of Richmond and a 16 year old male resident of Richmond, a short distance away, and placed them under arrest. Hopson was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, and the 16 year old was transported to Juvenile Hall, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Saturday August 18, 2007 at about 7:02 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to Longs Drugs, at 10650 San Pablo Ave, on a report of shoplifting. After an investigation Frankie J. Williams, a 34 year old male resident of Richmond, and Magenta L. Watts, a 20 year old female resident of Richmond, were arrested for theft. Williams and Watts were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Friday August 17, 2007 at about 6:08 am El Cerrito Police Officers responded to Safeway, at 10636 San Pablo Ave, on a report of shoplifting. After an investigation Anthony Louis Nelson, a 49 year old male resident of Richmond, was arrested for theft. Nelson was released pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Thursday August 16, 2007 at about 2:38 pm Officer Jacala arrested Alex Navaratte, a 22 year old male resident of Richmond, after Navarette was found in possession of marijuana for sales during a traffic stop. Navarette was released pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Wednesday August 15, 2007 at about 4:59 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 7800 block of Burns Court. After an investigation Scott Arko, a 54 year old male resident of El Cerrito, was arrested for assault. Arko was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Wednesday August 15, 2007 at about 3:28 pm Officer Cooper arrested Daniel Taylor, a 44 year old male resident of Richmond, after Taylor was found in possession of stolen property during a traffic stop. Taylor was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Monday August 13, 2007 at about 10:44 am El Cerrito Police Officers responded to Target, at 11450 San Pablo Ave, on a report of shoplifting. After an investigation Victoria McCroey, a 36 year old female resident of Richmond, was arrested for theft. McCroey was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Monday August 13, 2007 at about 8:01 am Officer Del Prado arrested Donald Jay Terral, a 43 year old male resident of Manteca, after Terral was found in possession of methamphetamine during a pedestrian stop. Terral was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Saturday August 11, 2007 at about 7:21 pm Officer Purdy arrested Jessica Roberts, a 32 year old female resident of Richmond, after she was found in possession of methamphetamine and stolen property. On Saturday August 11, 2007 at about 9:20 am El Cerrito Police Officers responded to Target, at 11450 San Pablo Ave, on a report of shoplifting. After an investigation Ivory Lewis, a 40 year old male resident of San Pablo, was arrested for theft. Lewis was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Friday August 10, 2007 at about 2:30 am Officer Guzman arrested Carson Simms, a 23 year old male resident of Hayward, Brian Reed, a 23 year old male resident of Milpitas, and Arthur Tsao, a 20 year old male resident of Hayward, after they were found to have spray painted graffiti in several locations in the city. Simms, Reed and Tsao were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Friday August 10, 2007 at about 4:30 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to Marshall's Department Store, at 10794 San Pablo Ave, on a report of a theft. After an investigation, Alex Navarrette, a 22 year old male resident of Richmond, Guillermo Claveria, a 23 year old male resident of Oakland, and Carnell Ainsworth, a 26 year old male resident of Richmond, were arrested for theft. Navarrette, Claveria and Ainsworth were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Wednesday August 8, 2007 at about 11:47 pm El Cerrito Police Officers responded to a report of a disturbance in the 2500 block of Mira Vista Drive. After an investigation Paul Guiou, a 30 year old male resident of El Cerrito, and Alicia Lennox, a 30 year old female resident of El Cerrito, were arrested for assault. Guiou was released and Lennox was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility, pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Wednesday August 8, 2007 at about 2:14 pm El Cerrito Police Officers served a search warrant in the 900 block of Lexington Ave. Debra Lee Walker, a 53 year old female resident of El Cerrito, and Rose Ramirez, a 57 year old female resident of El Cerrito, were arrested after they were found in possession of methamphetamine for sales. Walker and Ramirez were transported to the Martinez Detention Facility pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney's Office.

On Sunday August 7, 2007 at about 11:32 pm Office Purdy arrested Lois Wallace Reed, a 61 year old female resident of Richmond, after Reed was found in the possession of methamphetamine during a traffic stop. Reed was released pending the filing of charges by the District Attorney?s Office.

On Monday August 6, 2007 at about 1:16 pm Sergeant Bonini arrested Nicholas Samaniego, a 20 year old male resident of San Pablo, after Samaniego was found in possession of a stolen handgun during a suspicious vehicle investigation.
